How to Pick a Great Domain Name!

This article is going to focus on picking a great domain name. I am not going to discuss how to purchase a domain name or where you can buy cheap domain names, just what name to buy.

 You Opinion Please!

So, what is your opinion, which is better? Gr8stuff4u.com or GreatStuffForYou.com?
This is a hard one, the first one is 10 letters which is a bonus but it has some weird symbols that are easily understood and remembered by some but difficult by others. This domain name is prone to sending valued, highly targeted and validated customers from advertising, word of mouth or return customers trying to remember you domain name, directly to your competition because they spelled your domain name wrong.
The second name spells it out for you. It’s easily remembered and you know that there is some kind of stuff there for you and perhaps anyone. Even though it is longer, in it’s purest for it is terse and right to the point “ Great Stuff For You”. Nothing extra in there maybe … stuff for you would be better. For the most part it is easy to remember and that is what matters!

Domain Names are Crucial to success!

A cool short, snappy domain name is not just nice to have, it’s crucial. Your domain name IS the location of the Internet business, it’s like having that corner lot where the McDonalds is located downtown, the busy corner, where your business would have massive amounts of walk ins and business. It’s a bit ironic how something that costs $9 USD a year can render $1000s in advertising, $1000s in programming and $1000s of equipment … useless.
Here are some pointers on what to keep in mind when you develop your domain name to ensure maximum success or should I say to ensure that your business does not fail because of a poor name!

Characteristics of Good Domain Names

Short names such as yahoo.com, google.com, rent.com, photos.com are all great domain names. They are short and easily remembered most of the time. This is only one component of a good name though.

Easily spelled domain names are best. Cool, in fade names like phriendz.com might be hard to remember. Hats4you.com or Hats4u.com are good names but the are prone to being misspelled and sending your visitors to your direct competition.

Using any type of a symbol other than letters and numbers (to a degree) is not a good idea. When people go to cheap-electronic-gifts.com, mentally, they don’t see the hyphens and would have a difficult time getting back to your site as a return visitor from memory.

The easier the domain name can be remembered the more likelihood of success. That is if you have good products or services.  How many times have you asked someone or been asked for a domain name and you kind of remembered it… well, you did not make it back to the website but, you did kind of remember it.

Descriptive names are always better. Peacocks4sale.com or Ilovelucy.com are domain names you can almost guess what is on the website. If you can keep it short then go for a descriptive name.

Be sure to understand extensions. Having a wood carvings eCommerce website names woodencarvings4sale.org would send an odd message to some people.

If you keep these points in mind when creating your domain name you should end up with a domain that won’t fail because of the name itself, maybe it will fail because you did not read my articles on increasing traffic or my increasing quality links to your site article, but it won’t be because of the domain name.

Thanks for giving me your time to read this article.
