Bingo has enjoyed decades of popularity in the U.S. with ages young and old. Originally called Beano, in 1923 a woman mistakenly yelled “Bingo” instead of “Beano” and the name stuck. Over the years, bingo games have been created for at-home family fun, and Bingo Nights have been enjoyed as favorite events for church groups, schools, bingo halls, and other organizations. A typical bingo card is made up of a grid, with the letters B, I, N, G, O serving as the headers, and then a column of numbers under each of the letters. Here is the breakdown of numbers that can be seen and the letters they correspond to: B = 1-15, I=16-30, N=31-45, G=46-60, and O=61-75. These letter/number combinations are also printed on individual balls which are mixed about in a cage or other cylinder. Individual balls are selected either by hand, or by automated device, and the corresponding number is called out for all bingo players to hear (ex. “I-22”).

The idea of the game is to quickly fill horizontal, vertical, or diagonal rows of 5 to win. Each card also contains a free square that can be used to make up a winning line. Once a player feels they have the necessary numbers to win, they yell “Bingo”, and the game is over. Many experienced players will play several cards at once, which builds in the level of anticipation and exhilaration. Picture this scene with anywhere from 50-200 people playing at once, and you get an idea of the energy that can be felt in a room on any given Bingo event! Payouts at these events have been known to reach $250 or more. The rush, and the anticipated win make Bingo a highly addictive “sport” for many. Now, bingo is also rapidly becoming a favorite game to play online, with bingo websites springing up across the Internet. Players can choose bingo games that offer online credits, or real cash payouts. Adding the option of online bingo adds even more popularity to this timeless game, for generations to come.
