Oh no, not again. Why is it that every month I totally forget that my car insurance is coming out of my bank account and I completely overspend so that there is nothing left to pay it? I was almost ok this time but thanks to a packet of chewing gum and a chocolate bar at the petrol station my direct debit bounced by £1. The most infuriating thing is that I only visited the bank yesterday during my lunch break to clear an overdraft on one of my other accounts. I would have moved the blooming £1 into my account to ensure that the debit would have gone through but did anyone think to tell me that my money was due to come out? No. Did anyone advise that I took out a printed bank statement because they couldn’t answer my questions properly? No.
Ah well, I’m going to have to send them a cheque again. I know you’re going to say that it’s my fault and by now I should remember what date my car insurance comes out and on a certain level know you’re right. Maybe I should seriously evaluate myself and my memory instead of trying to shirk the blame onto everybody else? I’m sure that it’s not just me who finds the endless bills and other bits and pieces a nightmare to remember. I could go on forever listing everyday things that you take for granted before you move out and buy your own house. The mortgage, TV license, gas and electric, water, sewerage, internet, car insurance, mortgage/rent on and on and on. Then you have to remember when you’re due for an MOT, a dental check up or a doctor’s appointment.
At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man I am going to stop moaning now. I know I am lucky to live in this part of the world and to have the luxury of the opportunity to pay for these amenities. Water, gas and electric are things that are often taken for granted in the Western world. Watching a short documentary on Africa the other day I began to realise just how lucky I am. Not being able to guarantee that you’re going to be able to buy food for your family or medicine for your sick children must be a terrible position to be in and one that I am likely never to have to experience first hand.
Even luckier is that I have the choice to shop around for the best prices for all of the things that I pay bills for, from my mortgage to my car insurance. There is no state gas and electric company so we get to enjoy the resulting competitive rates. The Internet is making this even easier of late as quality comparison websites are popping up like beautiful snowdrops on the financial mountainside. Deals are now better than ever because companies know that you can simply find another insurer with a few clicks of the finger.
Of course, next time I am going to make sure I don’t get caught out. I might have had my chocolate craving satisfied but goodness gracious, that Crunchie sure did de-credit me.
