Birthday Weekend

It is at times like this that I wish I’d made the decision to go to a university that was a little closer to home. It was my birthday this weekend and I had organized to go home to see my family and friends, as you do. My flat-mates were all going home for the weekend and going out in a university town on Friday or Saturday is far too expensive, so I swapped a Saturday of overpriced, over-sweet cocktails for a four-hour drive.
Four hours driving is arduous enough. Couple this with gale force winds and relentless rain and I am sure you can imagine. There I was humming along in my Peugeot 206, blowing from one side of the road to the other and straining my neck as far forward as my collarbone would allow, peering through the monsoon. All of a sudden the grit truck in front of me started to shed its load. The frantic wind was kindly blowing sluices of grit from the inside of the truck and peppering them onto the bonnet of my car.
I tried to slow down, much to the protest of the already grinding snail’s pace line of cars behind me. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw that the man driving the car behind me appeared to be reading a text message and not watching my break lights. I had no choice but to keep driving into the stone storm in front.
By the time I arrived back in Cornwall the rain had stopped. I reversed into my drive and got out and checked the damage, gloomily noting that it looked as though a flock of pigeons with bowel problems had flown over my car.
Lugging out all of my bags and shoes from the boot, I thanked the stars that I had fully comprehensive car insurance. As my car is painted an unusual metallic shade I knew a paint job would have been too much for me to afford if I wasn’t covered. I booked my car into the garage down the road and settled down for a relaxing weekend at home.
The day that I was due to travel back to university the weather seemed to have cleared up. I sorted through a few of my letters and opened an important looking brown one marked ‘urgent’. It informed me that my car insurance had run out one week ago after my direct debit failed to process due to insufficient funds. Just lucky that it was my birthday I guess, at least now I know what I will be spending my birthday money on…paint!
When I got back to University I started to unpack my things and tidy my room. Opening my desk drawer I noticed a post it note stuck to the inside of a notepad. Ripping it off to throw it away, I noticed that in scrawled red writing it read ‘find cheap car insurance online’. I wrote another one saying ‘pay attention to post it notes!’
