Debt management and Your Spouse

Sometimes in life, the partner we choose has a different spending philosophy than we do. It may be the case that your spouse is more of a spender than you are, or vice-versa. In order to keep an even balance, and family member's credit record clean, you can work with your credit reporting agency to have the files separated. Most credit reporting agencies have a form letter designed for this purpose. What this does is to clearly designate which are separate and which are joint accounts, and help each member of the family learn responsibility for their spending habits.

Counselling agencies are available also where couples can go to learn about their spending behavior. World News reported just recently (http://article.wn.com/view/2008/12/12/UK_relationship_counselling_soars/) about the counselling service Relate, saying "British couples are struggling to stay together as they face money worries and the threat of redundancy in the economic downturn, said counselling service Relate, which has seen its workload soar." The article, by Kate Kelland, was first reported in December, 2008, and states that "Relate reported a rise of almost 60 per cent in the number of couples seeking help with their relationships in October and November this year as compared with last year". It is clear that differences in spending habits exacerbate relationship problems.

Working together with your spouse and your credit reporting agency, you can achieve a very great deal. With self-knowledge comes problem solving. You can encourage your spouse to form better spending habits, and work together on a budget and learning how to stick to it. Working with an outside counselling agency will help alleviate the attendant depression and anxiousness that comes with economic turmoil and having to rework one's personal habits. You can turn your credit around and have the cooperation of family members while doing it, if everyone realizes the scope of the problem and that there are solutions available. As difficult as this may seem, it is essential to recognize that philosophy of spending has a lot to do with current family situations, and that it is very important all family members be on the right track to correct problems before they become major ones.
