Being in debt, that is being in serious debt, is one of the most distressing and painful experiences there is. It can drive people to despair and even suicide. It has been likened to being trapped inside a railway level crossing with an express train bearing down on you. When you are in debt it feels as if you have no control, that your life is in the balance, you are on hold and at the mercy of others. You feel ashamed.
The brown envelopes come through the door. You let them pile up and don’t even bother opening them anymore. Then come the phone calls harassing you for money. You stop answering them but they find out your work telephone number and phone you there. Your colleagues hear your conversations and you feel ashamed.
How did it happen? It might not have been your fault. You might have been persuaded by external pressures to overextend yourself, you might have had to find money for an emergency, you might have lost your job, or you might just have a bad spending habit. Whatever the reason, you feel ashamed.
In these circumstances it is difficult to put your life back together, but this is what you must do. Over time you will need to examine your situation in detail, possibly look into debt consolidation and debt management but the first thing you must do is get some initial help and basic debt advice.
So, collect all your brown envelopes together then phone up your local Citizens Advice Bureau and make an appointment to talk with the debt counselor. This should be your first port of call. They will help you collate all the information on to whom you owe money, to decide which creditors you should priorities, for instance your rent or your mortgage. They will advise you what to do next, for instance suggest organisations that might be able to help you further.
Once you have made that initial move you will have made a start at getting your life back together. You will be able to believe that one day you will be the other side of debt.
