If you want to go into business for yourself and you're thinking about buying a franchise, you'll want to do your homework. Franchises can provide you with a lot of benefits, but they can also offer you some problems, and they aren't guaranteed to succeed just because they have a famous name. They, too, can fail like any business, and the best thing to do is to research the potential that the business will have in your area before you commit to buying the franchise. The first thing that you want to do in order to help you make your decision is to get focused. You don't want to just pick any franchise because you think it sounds like a popular one. You have to know what your skills are, what you're passionate about, and what you're willing to work for. If you don't pick a franchise that matters to you, you'll likely find that you aren't happy at all and your business might suffer for it. You can hire a franchise consultant to help you with this step. Once you're focused, you'll want to call the franchisor that you're considering.

When you talk to the franchisor ask a lot of questions and request that they send you their UFOC, which is a federally-mandated document that has a lot of the information in it that you'll want to know, including the names of other franchisees – these are the people you'll want to call and talk to after you've thoroughly gone over the UFOC. When you call the franchisees, don't be afraid to ask all kinds of questions. This is a serious investment, and you want to know everything about it before you make your decision. Once you've talked to them ask yourself whether this is still something that you want to pursue. If so, you'll want to visit some franchisees and also visit the franchisor. If you're still committed at that point, get an accountant to help you – preferably one that has worked with franchisees and franchisors before. This doesn't guarantee you success, but taking these steps goes a long way toward it.
