"Beam me up Scotty!" Since the days of the original Star Trek series we’ve been dreaming of that cool, in-hand, communicator, which summons help at the touch of a button and thereby rescues us from all sorts of demons and dangers. Of course we don’t have the teleportation yet to whisk us out of danger. We wish! The question is, is the mobile phone just another cool gadget, or is it an incredibly useful tool to save lives?
A recent story in the media reported a mum out driving along a country lane, on the way to pick up her son from nursery school. When she saw someone laying on the road her first thought was that he was fixing a tractor. He turned out to be a cyclist who had met with a bad accident. There is no doubt that having her mobile phone handy saved this mom precious time in calling for help. Hopefully the story had a happy ending. Then I’ve seen on the news more than one report of a missing teenage girl traced to her last seen location from data provided by her mobile phone. There’s no doubt that a mobile phone call helped investigators track down that missing person.
Teens head off to parties, mobile phone in hand, secure in the knowledge that they will be able to call mum or dad for help, or to report where they are and when they’ll be home. Friends are casual about meet-up arrangements, knowing that they can call to communicate their exact whereabouts and E.T.A. Wives say goodbye to husbands heading off on business trips, not caring exactly where they are going, happy that they will be able to reach them at any time on the one, easy to remember, mobile phone number. I think the evidence stands for itself.
